Ernesto Garcia de Leon

Professor of Composition and Guitar at the Music School of the

National Institute for the Fine Arts in Mexico City

Composer Ernesto García de León has been commissioned to produce a composition for the 2008 Latino Dance and Music Festival. It will receive a double premiere, first as a concert piece and then as a choreographed dance. Mr. de León teaches guitar and composition at the Music School of the National Fine Arts Institute in Mexico City. He studied guitar at the National Music Conservatory (of the Autonomous University of Mexico) and received high marks with distinction at the Royal Academy of Music. He has performed and presented master classes throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe. His music is published by Michael Lorimer Editions (New York).

 About the Festival

The Latino Dance and Music Festival is five days of classes, workshops, concerts, lectures and a Gran Competencia, all focusing on folkloric dance and classical guitar music representative of various Latin countries and composers. The festival culminates with a day of performances and exhibitions including the world premiere of a new work by composer Ernesto García de León, to be choreographed by guest artist Elisa de la Rosa. Many of the concerts and related activities will be open to the general public.

Who should attend the Dance Festival?

The Festival is open to students of dance, teachers of dance, performers and members of folkloric dance ensembles, ages 12 and up. Instructional tracks are organized according to the experience level of the dancers or ensembles to ensure a full educational and artistic experience for each participant. The Gran Competencia has special significance as participants will perform for adjudication throughout the week with finalists selected to perform in the Saturday evening gala performance.

Who should attend the Music Festival?

The music component is intended for intermediate and advanced students of guitar at the secondary school, university or professional level. Students of music and, in particular, of Latino art music and culture, will find participation beneficial. Primary musical emphasis will be on the classical tradition as influenced by various national folk and cultural expressions and idioms.

Our goal is to educate the public as well as developing dancers in the beauty and diversity of the Latino culture.
